The United Nations General Assembly convened a 3-day special session to address the significant increase in HIV/AIDS cases worldwide. From June 25-27th, nine plenary sessions addressed AIDS action plans, resource mobilization, social commitments to the epidemic, and future prevention priorities.
The UN and numerous health organizations sponsored other events during the special session to increase public awareness of AIDS:
