The journal, PLoS Medicine, has released a special edition on 'social medicine,' which includes 15 articles and research papers that look at the socioeconomic, ethical and cultural dimensions of health.

David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D. is the Poussaint-Satcher-Cosby Professor of Mental Health at the Morehouse School of Medicine. He is a former U.S. Surgeon General and is a Trustee of the Kaiser Family Foundation. Dr. Satcher contributed an article about ethnic disparities in health and strategies for overcoming those disparities. He spoke with Kaiser Family Foundation vice president Jackie Judd.

Paul Farmer, M.D., Ph.D. is associated with Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and is a co-founder of Partners in Health. Dr. Farmer contributed an article on the need for doctors to consider the social determinants of disease when treating patients. He uses examples related to the treatment of people with HIV/AIDS to demonstrate how this can be successfully done. Dr. Farmer spoke with Kaiser Family Foundation vice president Jackie Judd.
