A new report, "The Effect of Socioeconomic Status on the Survival of People Receiving Care for HIV Infection in the United States," published in the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved, investigates whether there is a link between low socioeconomic status of people infected with HIV and their death rate. Researchers conclude even when medical services and insurance coverage were factored in, HIV-positive people who had the least wealth, education or job status were at a greater risk of death than others.

William Cunningham, M.D., M.P.H., who led the research team, is a professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Health Services Research at the School of Public Health at UCLA. Dr. Cunningham is interviewed by Jackie Judd of the Kaiser Family Foundation

From the Journals highlights current research on health policy published in major professional journals and is part of the special interview series "A Closer Look."
