The 2003 Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights was awarded to the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), for its historic contribution to the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS and for advancing access to treatment for HIV-positive people in South Africa and internationally. TAC is the first organization to receive the Award (recipients are usually individuals) in recognition of TAC's effectiveness in mobilizing a broad public coalition in support of its goals.
