Coverage, Access and Quality | House Committee Calls for Immigration and Customs Enforcement Detainee Records in Response to Washington Post Series
[May 16, 2008]

House Judiciary Committee leaders on Thursday in a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff requested thousands of documents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement related to health care provided to immigrants in detention centers, CongressDaily reports.

In the letter, committee Chair John Conyers (D-Mich.) and Immigration, Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security and International Law Subcommittee Chair Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) requested documents from as early as 2002 on the deaths of detained immigrants and on the medical and mental health care they received. The lawmakers said they made the request in response to a four-day Washington Post series, titled "Careless Detention," on the treatment of detained immigrants. They asked ICE to provide the same documents that the Post received from the agency, unredacted, within five days (CongressDaily, 5/15).
