Jon Kingsdale, a senior vice president of policy development at Tufts Health Plan, said last week that he expects a "formal offer" for a key position in the Gov. Mitt Romney (R) administration that will decide how to implement the new Massachusetts health insurance law, the Boston Globe reports. Kingsdale -- who is in charge of policy, government relations and consumer-directed health products at Tufts -- said he was approached by the Romney administration to become the executive director of the Health Insurance Connector. According to the Globe, Kingsdale said he is interested in the position. Under the new Massachusetts law, the Connector must approve and have insurance plans available for those with annual incomes lower than 300% of the federal poverty level by Oct. 1, to ensure that nearly all residents have health insurance by July 2007. The Connector will establish a market for insurance companies to sell low-cost policies. The position also would be responsible for creating "key rules" of the program, such as what level of premiums is affordable for the state's uninsured residents, the Globe reports. Richard Powers, a spokesperson for the Massachusetts Department of Health and Human Services, would not confirm that Kingsdale is a candidate, the Globe reports (Kowalczyk/Krasner, Boston Globe, 5/19).
