Louisiana U.S. Senate candidate Suzanne Haik Terrell (R) reiterated her opposition to abortion on Tuesday following reports that she was listed as an honorary co-chair of a 1994 Planned Parenthood event, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports (Anderson, New Orleans Times-Picayune, 9/18). During her tenure as a member of the New Orleans City Council, Terrell was listed as an honorary co-chair on an invitation to a Planned Parenthood of Louisiana and the Mississippi Delta event held in New Orleans. Terrell said that her name was printed on the materials "without her knowledge or permission." However, Terri Bartlett, who was the chief operating officer of PPLMD in 1994, said that her organization asked Terrell for permission to print her name on the invitation and she agreed to have her name listed. The incident has prompted conservatives to claim that Terrell has "switched her stance on abortion out of political expediency" (Kaiser Daily Reproductive Health Report, 9/17). State Rep. Tony Perkins (R), who is running against Terrell in the race to unseat of Sen. Mary Landrieu (D), said that Terrell should "clarify her position" on abortion and "explain why she was linked to an event to raise money for the 'largest abortion provider in the world.'" He added, "The issue is she has helped raise money for pro-abortion groups. For years, I have been raising money for crisis pregnancy centers." Terrell said that she "always has been antiabortion" and has the backing of many abortion-rights opponents. Al Krotowski, president of the Louisiana Right to Life Federation, said that he believes Terrell's listing on the Planned Parenthood materials was an error. Terrell said that the controversy is a tactic employed by Perkins to "drum up support for his 'sinking campaign'" (New Orleans Times-Picayune, 9/18).
