U.N. Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa Stephen Lewis on Monday arrived in Uganda for a six-day visit that will focus on the impact of HIV/AIDS on the lives of the country's women and children, including AIDS orphans, Xinhua News Agency reports (Xinhua News Agency, 7/29). Uganda has had success in lowering its HIV prevalence by employing the "ABC" HIV prevention model -- abstinence, be faithful, use condoms. President Bush has cited Uganda's program as a model for his global AIDS initiative (Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, 7/14). During the trip, Lewis will meet with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and other government officials, Xinhua reports. "It is excellent to discuss with Ugandans what it was they did to achieve [lower HIV/AIDS prevalence]. Our effort is to look at the positive changes and extract what we can," Lewis said, Xinhua reports. While in Uganda, Lewis is traveling with children's rights advocate Grace Machel, wife of former South African President Nelson Mandela (Xinhua News Agency, 7/29).
