Global Challenges | African First Ladies Hold Summit to Discuss Ways of Fighting HIV/AIDS on Continent
[Jul 18, 2002]

The wives of 18 African leaders are meeting this week in Switzerland to discuss ways of combating Africa's HIV/AIDS epidemic, BBC News reports. The women have met on nine previous occasions in the past year and a half to discuss HIV/AIDS and its effects on Africa, but the current three-day meeting, which will end with the launch of a new organization tasked with fighting the disease on the continent, has been "greeted with skepticism" by some observers, who say that people are "tired of meetings which produce nothing, and want action rather than words." Many AIDS advocates would like to see governments introduce "systematic" treatment programs to reduce the odds of vertical HIV transmission (BBC News, 7/17).
