A recent shortage of the BCG tuberculosis vaccine in Kenya has put thousands of infants born in the past month at risk of contracting the disease, Tatu Kamau, the manager of the Kenya Expanded Program on Immunization, said on Wednesday, the East African Standard reports. More than 100,000 infants have not received the vaccine since the country ran out at the beginning of April, Kamau said. She added that there have been "problems getting supplies into the country" but that the government expects to get a new stock within two weeks.
Kamau urged women to take their children to local health centers in the next two weeks to receive TB vaccinations. "We assure them that we will have the vaccine at health centers," Kamau said, noting that the children can receive the vaccine up to age five (Mwai, East African Standard, 5/1).
