Health in the Community | CBS 'Evening News' Profiles Director of Harlem, N.Y., Cancer Prevention Center
[Mar 13, 2007]

CBS' "Evening News" on Tuesday profiled Harold Freeman -- medical director of the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention in East Harlem, N.Y., and director of the Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities at the National Cancer Institute -- who has devoted his career to "unravel[ing] the connection between cancer, race and poverty." Freeman more than 15 years ago "pioneered" the center's patient navigation program, "which begins by encouraging people in the community to get screened and, if necessary, finds financial assistance to help them pay for their treatment," CBS reports. Freeman said the patient navigation program has helped increase the five-year survival rate for breast cancer in Harlem from 39% to 70% (Couric, "Evening News," CBS, 3/12).

Video of the segment is available online.
