Recent Releases | GAO Study Evaluates ADAP Coverage, Drug Pricing
[Apr 27, 2006]
"Ryan White CARE Act: Improved Oversight Needed To Ensure AIDS Drug Assistance Programs Obtain Best Prices for Drugs," Government Accountability Office: The GAO study looks at the differences in eligibility and prescription drug prices among 52 AIDS Drug Assistance Programs. The report finds that each ADAP has "considerable flexibility" in deciding who is eligible for coverage. In addition, the report finds that some ADAPs pay more than the price set under the 340B federal program, which provides discounts on certain drugs, for some of the 10 drugs evaluated in the study. GAO recommends that the Health Resources and Services Administration, which monitors the drug prices ADAPs pay, mandate that ADAPs report the final price of each drug they purchase. In addition, the report says that HRSA should compare prices ADAPs pay with the 340B prices (GAO report 4/26).
