State Politics & Policy | New Hampshire Governor Signs Bill Allowing Emergency Contraception To Be Sold Without Doctor's Prescription
[Jun 17, 2005]

New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch (D) on Thursday signed a bill (SB 30) that will allow pharmacists to dispense emergency contraception to customers without a doctor's prescription, the AP/Portsmouth Herald reports (McCormack, AP/Portsmouth Herald, 6/16). The law will apply only to pharmacists who voluntarily participate in a training session sponsored by the state Board of Pharmacy. Pharmacists will not be required to undergo the training (Kaiser Daily Reproductive Health Report, 5/27). State Rep. Sandra Keans (R), who sponsored the bill, said the state pharmacy board will organize the pharmacists' trainings and develop a time frame for dispensing the pills, which can prevent pregnancy if taken within 72 hours of sexual intercourse (AP/Portsmouth Herald, 6/16). Six states -- Maine, Alaska, California, Hawaii, Washington and New Mexico -- already have laws allowing EC to be obtained without a prescription, according to Reuters (Heavey, Reuters, 6/16). Lynch praised the Legislature's bipartisan effort to approve the bill and called the new law "good common sense," according to the AP/TheWMURChannel.com (AP/TheWMURChannel.com, 6/16). The law takes effect in 60 days (AP/Portsmouth Herald, 6/16).
