The New York City Council on Wednesday overrode Mayor Michael Bloomberg's (R) vetoes of two bills that would expand access to emergency contraception in the city, the New York Times reports (Kaufman/Christian, New York Times, 4/10). The City Council voted 43-8 to override Bloomberg's veto of a bill (278A) that would require pharmacies to post signs stating whether they dispense EC. The Council also overrode by a vote of 47-4 Bloomberg's veto of a bill (281A) that would require hospitals with city contracts to provide EC to rape survivors (Lombardi, New York Daily News, 4/10). Both bills initially passed the City Council with "very wide margins," according to the New York Post (Edozien, New York Post, 4/9). Bloomberg last month did sign into law a bill (285A) that will make EC -- which can prevent pregnancy if taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse -- available in the city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene clinics and health facilities (Kaiser Daily Reproductive Health Report, 3/20).
