Paul Farmer, a Harvard University doctor who has treated about 200 HIV-positive people in central Haiti with triple-antiretroviral therapy through his Partners in Health program, spoke yesterday at the XIV International AIDS Conference in Barcelona, Spain, the Washington Post reports. Farmer said that his group's work in the town of Cange is a "dramatic example of simplifying [HIV] treatment and bringing it to the poor" and should serve as a model for treatment programs in other developing countries. Partners in Health, which will expand its efforts to four more sites in Haiti this year, is sharing a $67 million grant made to Haiti by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
