The Latest Reports in Health Policy
"Are California's Large Employers Moving to Catastrophic Health Insurance Coverage?" Health Affairs: The report by James Maxwell, director of health policy and management research at the JSI Research and Training Institute; Peter Temin, a professor of economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and colleagues examines California employers' adoption and implementation of high-deductible health plans for their workers prior to the 2003 Medicare law. According to the report, which focuses on data collected from 318 large employers from fall 2002 to spring 2003, only a few California employers offered a high-deductible PPO or consumer-driven health plan and enrollment in such plans was low. However, employers expressed "equal interest in both plans" and cited "both advantages and disadvantages" (Maxwell et al., Health Affairs, 5/17).
